WASHINGTON, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- ABC News Anchor Bob Woodruff will give the keynote address at the International Center for Journalists' 10th Annual Awards Dinner on November 13. Woodruff was severely injured last year in a roadside bomb attack in Iraq. After months of rehabilitation, he has returned to work at ABC News. In his 11 years at the network, he has been a lead reporter on such key news events as 9/11, the war in Afghanistan, and the Asian tsunami.
"Bob Woodruff has shown an astounding level of commitment to covering international issues," ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan said. "In the course of bringing us the news, he has made enormous sacrifices and stands as an example to us all."
At the event, Tom Brokaw will receive an award for journalism excellence in honor of the International Center for Journalists' three founders, who were dedicated to advancing high-quality journalism worldwide. Last year's winner, CBS News' Bob Schieffer, will present the award.
In more than 40 years as a journalist, Brokaw has covered such monumental events as the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Vietnam War, the war in Iraq and every U.S. presidential election since 1968. Though he stepped down as NBC Nightly News Anchor in 2004, he continues to produce documentaries and cover international news for NBC.
ICFJ Chairman James Hoge said, "Tom's long record of enterprise reporting and informed analysis is an inspiration to the journalists that ICFJ recognizes this year and every year."
The International Center for Journalists' Awards Dinner will take place at the Newseum, which will open its doors to a new, 250-square-foot location on the Mall in Washington, D.C. in September 2007.
Along with Brokaw, three international journalists will be honored for their outstanding work. The Knight International Journalism Fellowship Program gives awards to two journalists. They will be presented by Alberto Ibarguen, president of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The Paul Klebnikov Fund for Courage in Journalism honors a journalist from the former Soviet Union.
"The Awards Dinner enables us to pay tribute to brave journalists struggling to provide high-quality coverage despite unthinkable hardships," Barnathan said.
The International Center for Journalists, a non-profit, professional organization, promotes quality journalism worldwide in the belief that independent, vigorous media are crucial in improving the human condition.
Over the past 22 years, ICFJ has worked directly with more than 20,000 journalists from 176 countries. Aiming to raise the standards of journalism, ICFJ offers hands-on training workshops, seminars, fellowships and international exchanges to reporters and media managers around the globe.
