Frauds Gone Wild: Barry Minkow Creates DVD Series to Help People Avoid Fraud

Frauds Gone Wild: Barry Minkow Creates DVD Series to Help People Avoid Fraud

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Each year, millions of Americans fall prey to financial fraud. From bogus investments promising outrageous returns, persistent telemarketers, or con artists who target the elderly or church members, Americans fell victim to the tune of $680 million dollars in 2005. The sad thing is, with a little due diligence, most of this fraud could be stopped.

On February 27, Barry Minkow and his Fraud Discovery Institute will release a three DVD series entitled "Frauds Gone Wild!" to help people avoid getting caught in fraud and to offer advice to those who suspect they may already be a fraud victim. These powerful, proactive tools to combat fraud will be available at Amazon.com and at selected retailers.

Starring and funded by an actual fraud victim who lost $500,000 in a scam, "Frauds Gone Wild!" explores the most common kinds of fraud. They include specific tips on how to recognize a fraud and the techniques that perpetrators use to commit fraud, such as offering unrealistic returns or offering commissions if investors recruit additional investors. An accompanying booklet titled, Uncovering Fraud Before It Buries You, provides additional insight and a resource list.

The DVDs are titled, "Protecting Yourself From Investment Fraud," "Protecting Yourself From Affinity Fraud," and "Protecting Yourself From Elder Fraud."

Barry Minkow is also author of the new book, Down But Not Out: 10 Steps For Rebuilding Your Life, Your Career (& All That Other Stuff), which also hit stores this month. The book draws on Minkow's own remarkable story to inspire others that they can indeed come back from failure. From minor setbacks to the worst, most abject and hopeless failures, there are lessons to be learned that can help anyone turn failure into true success. The book picks up Barry's remarkable comeback story, which was featured in the 2006 New York Times Best Seller, Cleaning Up.

Barry Minkow earned a masters degree of divinity from Liberty University and today divides his time between uncovering fraud and serving as the senior pastor of Community Bible Church in San Diego. In the 1980s, Minkow became one of the USA's most notorious white-collar criminals after the public company he founded, ZZZZ Best, was exposed as being a fraud. At 21 years old, Minkow received a 25-year prison sentence and a $26 million dollar restitution order. Released from prison after nearly 8 years, Minkow was ordered to fight fraud and founded the Fraud Discovery Institute, which trains law enforcement in the techniques that perpetrators use to commit fraud, and also exposes ongoing fraud that the authorities are not aware of. Since 2004, Barry has led the FBI and SEC to over $1 billion dollars in ongoing fraud.
