Night at the Museum posts strong second weekend results in IMAX(R) theatres
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- IMAX Corporation and Twentieth Century Fox today announced that the holiday blockbuster Night at the Museum posted another strong performance in IMAX(R) theatres through its second weekend. For the four-day New Year's holiday weekend (Friday, December 29 through Monday January 1, 2007), the digitally re-mastered IMAX release grossed $2.5 million at 72 domestic IMAX theatres - an 11% increase over the Christmas holiday weekend. The film also performed well in its initial international engagements, grossing an estimated $600,000 from 12 locations. Night at the Museum: The IMAX Experience has now grossed a worldwide total of $7.4 million in only 11 days.
"We are delighted that moviegoers of all ages are going to IMAX theatres to experience the film in a unique way and we are very pleased with the film's overall success in both conventional and IMAX theatres," said Bruce Snyder, President, Domestic Distribution, Twentieth Century Fox. "The added level of excitement that the immersive IMAX Experience(R) brings to Night at the Museum is a contributor to the film's continued success."
Good-hearted dreamer Larry Daley (Ben Stiller), despite being perpetually down on his luck, thinks he's destined for something big. But even he could never have imagined how "big," when he accepts what appears to be a menial job as a graveyard-shift night watchman at a museum of natural history. But during Larry's watch, something extraordinary happens: the museum's exhibits magically come to life. A fearsome T-Rex insists on a game of fetch (with one of his own skeleton bones); Mayans, Roman Gladiators, and cowboys emerge from their diorama to wage epic battles; and a wax figure of Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams) gives Larry important advice while harboring a crush for an Indian princess. As things spiral wildly out of control, Larry must find a way to control the magic to stop a nefarious plot and save the museum.
