Yes on 89 Newest Campaign Innovation: Cumbia

Spanish Language Dance Song Headlines Multi-Faceted, Bilingual Outreach to Latino Community

OAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Yes on Proposition 89 campaign -- a ballot initiative to clean up political corruption -- is announcing a new Spanish language radio and voter contact campaign built around "Si en la 89," a cumbia sensation by noted Los Angeles band XochiSoneros. The band will be performing the song throughout the Southland and on the radio for the rest of the campaign. Listen now at: ftp://ftp.hsp-central.net/cna/sienla89_ad_cna_pac_tag.mp3 .

The song builds on strong momentum in the Latino community, including the recent endorsements of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and La Opinion. Proposition 89 has built that momentum through bilingual phone banking, ads targeted to Spanish- and English-speaking Latinos, and coalition building with leading Latino organizations.

Latino voters, like others, are looking for a way to end the blatant corruption in our government -- which Propostion 89 will end. As the song puts it: "Que el gobierno no esta en venta/vota si en ochenta y nueve" or, "So that the government is not for sale... vote yes on 89!"

Lyrics to Si en la ochenta y nueve / Yes on 89
Los candidatos, los gobernantes / The candidates, the people in power
Son los mas ricos quienes los mueven / Its the rich that control them
Para hacer valer tu voto / To make your vote count
Di: "si a la ochenta y nueve" / Say yes to 89
Que no gobierne el dinero / So that it's not money that governs
Di: "'yes' a la ochenta y nueve" / Say "yes" to 89

Que el gobierno no este en venta / So that government won't be for sale
Vota SI en la ochenta y nueve / Vote YES on 89

Para que la gente mande / So that the people call the shots
Vota SI ... / Vote YES ...
Pa'que vean que si se puede / So they see that "yes we can"
Vota SI ... / Vote YES ...
Pa'acabar con la mordida / To put an end to payoffs
Vota SI ... / Vote YES ...

Prop. 89 was placed on the ballot by the California Nurses Association to clean up political corruption. Prop 89 reforms the broken system of campaign finance in this state that contributes to widespread corruption in government. The initiative places strict limits on political contributions by corporations, unions, and individuals, including a cap of corporate contributions to ballot initiatives at $10,000. Prop. 89 also bans contributions from lobbyists and state contractors to candidates, and sets up a system of "clean," or public, financing for political campaigns that will allow candidates to give up private fundraising. Prop. 89 contains strong enforcement mechanisms, meaning that if politicians break the law, they can end up in jail.

Over 200 good government and reform groups have already endorsed Prop. 89, including: the William C. Velasquez Institute, Latino Congreso Nacional, the League of Women Voters of California, AARP California, California Common Cause, The California Nurses Association, the Sierra Club, and United Teachers Los Angeles.
