Primetime Show to Put Spotlight on Public Funding of Federal Elections
CONCORD, N.H., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- A new primetime special by PBS focusing on the public funding of elections will include interviews with two key members of Americans for Campaign Reform (ACR), the Just $6 movement.
The show, produced by the NOW series, is titled, "Who Pays for America's Elections?" and is hosted by veteran journalist David Brancaccio. It will examine the public funding movement, including the success in several states. Former Sen. Alan Simpson (R-Wyo.), an ACR Honorary Chair, and John Rauh, ACR's Founder and President, were interviewed for the show as well as campaign finance reform experts, organization leaders, and state officials.
Rauh commended NOW for putting a spotlight on public financing. "The public knows there is problem with the current system of private financing. They are not yet aware of the solution, public financing. This show will help spread the word."
"Recognizing the magnitude of the challenges facing America today, it is imperative that we remove the barrier to selecting our nation's leadership," Rauh said. "That can only happen if we replace our current private financing system with voluntary public funding of both our Congressional and Presidential elections. There is no issue more central to the long term vitality of our democracy and to our ability to meet our challenges." To hear more from John Rauh and others on this issue, tune in Friday, October 20. Americans for Campaign Reform (ACR) is a nonpartisan grassroots organization building a movement of citizens to pressure Congress to enact voluntary public funding of all federal elections. According to ACR's calculations, all federal races can be funded by Congress spending Just $6 per citizen per year.
Along with Simpson, ACR's Honorary Chairs are former Democratic Sens. Bill Bradley and Bob Kerrey and former Republican Sen. Warren Rudman.
