LOS ANGELES, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The Black AIDS Institute will host the sixth annual Heroes in the Struggle awards presentation, on Thursday, November 16, 2006, 6:00 PM., at the Directors Guild of America. This annual event attracts over 1,000 people including celebrities, elected officials, and the community. This years' honorees are Dionne Warwick and Friends (Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Carol Bayer Sager, and Burt Bacharach) for their work on the song "That's What Friends Are For", celebrity photographer Duane Cramer, film producer and director Patrik-Ian Polk, and AIDS activists Rashida Abdul-Kabir, Rev. Michael Beckwith and Tony Wafford. The Black AIDS Institute will also be sending the exhibition of Heroes around the country and hosting events at each of the 17 Black Gay Pride Events.
In addition to the awards program, actor Rocky Carroll (Roc/Chicago Hopes) will host the entertainment portion of the show featuring popular recording artist Cheryl Lynn, who scored several #1 hit, including "Got To Be Real," "Shake It Up Tonight," "If This World Were Mine," w/Luther Vandross and "Encore." Several stellar musicians contributed to the success of these recordings and they have been invited to perform with Cheryl that evening; David Paich (Got To Be Real), Ray Parker, Jr. (Shake It Up Tonight) and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (Encore). Additionally, Las Vegas comedian J. Reid will open the evening's performance and there will be a sneak preview from the forthcoming stage musical, "Invisible Life: The Musical," with new music written by Ashford & Simpson.
The VIP reception begins at 6:00 PM, allowing the guests to peruse the silent auction which consists of a trip to Bermuda, the entire autographed collection of E. Lynn Harris books (The Invisible Life), a trip to a famous Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, a complete hair weave by Elgin Charles of Beverly Hills, a week at Becky's By The Sea (Barbados), Stevie Wonder's entire CD collection, a week's stay at a Palm Springs home with pool and tennis court and much more.
