NEW YORK, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- On Wednesday, October 4 through Monday, October 9, New York will host the Harlem International Film Festival (HIFF). The festival offers features, documentaries, shorts, animated works, youth films and the Renaissance Awards, which honor inspirational individuals in entertainment, business and community development.
This wonderful event will take place at the Magic Johnson AMC Theatre on 124 Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd., including a news conference on October 5 at 6 p.m. This year's Renaissance Awards will honor Mario Van Peebles.
Co-founded by three Harlem-based filmmakers and dedicated to supporting the artistic life of Harlem, HIFF screens over seventy films from around the world that spotlight the life, history and the people of Harlem.
The only international film festival that takes place in Harlem, New York, HIFF is committed to exemplifying the excellence that this world-famous neighborhood has played in the entire entertainment history. The film programming and events are designed to serve the diverse communities of Upper Manhattan including Spanish Harlem, Central Harlem, Morningside Heights, Washington Heights, Inwood and the student communities of Columbia University, Bard College and City College.
The festival will focus on a broad range of topics ranging from the political crisis in the Middle East to the tragedy and fall out of Hurricane Katrina. Many of these films will shed light on the continued black experience of racism and sexism that still exists in America and around the world.
