In the Year Since Katrina, Americans Are Stockpiling Emergency Supplies
In the year since Hurricane Katrina caused widespread devastation along the Gulf Coast, nearly four out of every five American adults say they have taken some precaution to prepare for an emergency. A national survey commissioned by American Media Services found that only twenty-one percent of Americans say they have not yet taken any precautions.
The survey found that a majority of Americans have bought candles or flashlights (sixty-two percent) or checked the batteries for their emergency equipment (fifty-four percent). Nearly half say they have stockpiled food and water (forty-six percent) and bought or checked a battery-powered radio (forty-three percent).

Legendary Musician Maynard Ferguson Dies
Walter "Maynard" Ferguson, one of the most influential musicians and band leaders in the history of Jazz, passed away August 23rd at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, California. He was seventy-eight years old. His death was the result of kidney and liver failure brought on by an abdominal infection.
Ferguson started his career at the age of thirteen when he performed as a featured soloist with the Canadian Broadcasting Company Orchestra. He played with some of the great Big Band Leaders of the 1940's including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Barnett, Jimmy Dorsey and Stan Kenton. In 1945, at age seventeen, Ferguson became the leader of his own Big Band. The seventy-eight-year old musical phenomenon went on to record more than sixty albums, receiving numerous honors and awards including the GRAMMY(R) nomination for "Gonna Fly Now," the theme to the movie Rocky.

D-M-X Cancels U-S-O Tour to Persian Gulf
Earl Simmons, who performs as rapper D-M-X, cancelled a week-long tour to entertain troops in Kuwait and Iraq. He offered no explanation. Simmons was scheduled to depart on his tour August 22nd, but delayed his departure until August 23rd. His representative agreed to add a day to the original schedule. However, on August 23rd, he failed to appear on time for his flight to Kuwait.
The U-S-O listens to the troops and does its best to provide the kinds of music and entertainment they request. Celebrities who have performed on U-S-O tours over the last few years include Fifty Cent, Toby Keith, Master P, Lil' Romeo and Jessica Simpson.
