Amateur Golfers Head to Pinehurst for Chance to Face Goosen and McCord in 2006 BASF People vs. the Pros

PINEHURST, N.C., Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Amateur golfers from 22 states are headed to Pinehurst Resort this week to compete in the 2006 BASF People vs. the Pros at Pinehurst, a unique reality television event being held Aug. 19-22, 2006.

The event will pit two amateurs against two-time U.S. Open Champion Retief Goosen and popular PGA Champions player Gary McCord in handicapped match play that will be televised nationally on ESPN2 later this fall. Total purse is $100,000; $50,000 goes to each winner's charity of choice. All proceeds are being donated to the respective winners' designated charity.

Using their handicap, approximately 200 amateur golfers divided equally in two age categories, 18-49 and 50+, will play a three-day, 54-hole stroke-play Finals competition at Pinehurst on Aug. 19-21. The winner of each age division in the Finals will advance to the Aug. 22 Grand Prize Match, an 18-hole match play tournament on Pinehurst No. 8.

"Anyone who loves to play the game of golf has at one time envisioned themselves putting their skills to the ultimate test against the best in the sport," said tournament director Andy Batkin. "People vs. the Pros is where those dreams can be realized on the dream course that is Pinehurst No. 8."

Earlier this year, BASF sponsored 20 qualifying tournaments for regional Golf Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) chapters to send 25 golf course superintendents to compete in the three-day Finals at Pinehurst. BASF will host the third annual BASF Superintendent's Cup, where the two golf course superintendents with the lowest net scores from the three-day Finals event will compete in head-to-head match play for a grand prize of $10,000 in cash and $10,000 worth of BASF products for their home course. The second place finisher in the BASF Superintendent's Cup will receive a cash prize of $5,000. The BASF Superintendent's Cup will be played on Pinehurst No. 8 in conjunction with the People vs. the Pros Grand Prize Match on Tuesday, Aug. 22.

People vs. the Pros is a production of Manhattan Beach, CA-based Innovative Media Solutions and Winnercomm, Inc., America's largest independent sports production company. Full tournament details are on the event's web site, http://www.pvpgolf.com/ .
