UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- "Double Indemnity," one of the most critically acclaimed suspense crime dramas of all time, comes to DVD in a new two-disc collector's set August 22, 2006 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. Directed by six-time Academy Award(R) winner Billy Wilder ("Sunset Boulevard") and starring Hollywood legends Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson, "Double Indemnity" tells a chilling tale of lust, murder and deception. This quintessential film noir was nominated for seven Oscars(R) including Best Picture and Best Actress. Wilder and hard-boiled crime novelist Raymond Chandler wrote the script based on James M. Cain's novella about a pair of amoral opportunists, obsessed with each other and planning the "perfect crime." Featuring cinematographer John Seitz's exquisite black and white settings, "Double Indemnity" was named one of the Top 100 Films in history by the American Film Institute.
"Double Indemnity" is the fourth release in the Universal Legacy Series of films. The digitally remastered print is available for the first time in this specially packaged, highly collectible two-disc set, which also includes all new bonus material. Previous Universal Legacy Series titles include "To Kill A Mockingbird," "The Sting" and "The Deer Hunter."
Based on an actual case, "Double Indemnity" tells the twisted tale of a scheming black widow (Barbara Stanwyck) who draws a smooth-talking insurance man (Fred MacMurray) into a web of intrigue and murder. When their insurance scam goes awry, the lovers turn against each other and it's everyone for themselves. The DVD is priced at $26.98 SRP. Preorder close is July 18, 2006.
SYNOPSIS
A calculating femme fatale (Barbara Stanwyck) convinces her husband to sign a life insurance policy that will pay double if he dies in an accident, and then seduces the insurance salesman (Fred MacMurray) into an elaborate plan to kill her husband and collect on the money. The partners-in-crime think they've committed the perfect murder, until the insurance company's claims adjustor (Edward G. Robinson) comes calling with suspicions of foul play. As the stakes get higher and the culprits find themselves in a fight for survival, the would-be-lovers begin to plot against each other. This intriguing thriller was brilliantly directed by Billy Wilder and received nominations for seven Academy Awards(R) including Best Picture, and Best Actress for Barbara Stanwyck. One of Hollywood's best film noirs, "Double Indemnity" is based on a true story.
