Cops Investigated in Encore's Original Special 'Shooting The Police: Cops On Film'
From 'Dragnet' to 'Die Hard' & Beyond - Special Kicks Off Encore's 'Summer Heat: 31 Days of Cop Movies'
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Encore examines the origin, popularity and phenomena of cop films in "Shooting the Police: Cops on Film," an original half-hour special premiering July 1 at 8:00 p.m., and throughout the month. The special was produced by Encore, as part of the promotion for "Summer Heat: 31 Days of Cop Movies," a month-long festival of cop films every night at 8:00 p.m., all month in July.
"Shooting the Police: Cops on Film" explores the transformation of the cop/hero from '50s squeaky clean/by the book image -- to today's darker hero/antihero, with more gray areas than black and white. Replacing the Western "good guy" of Hollywood's Golden Era, the modern cop film with its seamier lawman, has scored a larger commercial appeal with mainstream audiences.
Filmmakers such as Larry Cohen ("Phonebooth," "Maniac Cop"), Carl Franklin ("One False Move," "Out of Time"), Steven de Sousa ("Die Hard," "48 Hours"), Irvin Kershner ("RoboCop 2," "Naked City") and others discuss the different types of cop films that have defined and advanced the genre. They will break down the concepts of the lone cop, the buddy-cop, the science fiction cop film, and the real-life cop films and the realism behind them. The special delves into these categories through use of clips from cop films such as "Die Hard," "Supercop," "Heat," "Nighthawks," "Copycat," "Rush Hour," "Hostage," "RoboCop," "Dragnet," "The Corruptor" and others.
"The cop film has always been a crowd pleaser, thrilling movie fans all over the world," says Michael Ruggiero, vice president of programming and scheduling for Encore and the special's executive producer. "Although the genre has taken on many new forms through the years, the films continue to evolve and excite."
