American Homeowners Grassroots Alliance Applauds Congressman Shaw for Vote on Cable Reform

WASHINGTON, June 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Americans are one step closer to saving millions of dollars a year on cable television service, following a bi- partisan vote in the U.S. House of Representatives to encourage competition for video services. Florida homeowners can credit Congressman Clay Shaw with helping to bring them more choice and lower prices, according to the American Homeowners Grassroots Alliance.

"Allowing new competitors to compete with cable TV monopolies on a national basis will save a typical homeowner who subscribes to video services approximately $240 a year," said Bruce Hahn, president and CEO of American Homeowners Grassroots Alliance. "The new law will provide the first step for consumers towards many other long-term benefits in addition to video services."

On behalf of the nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that serves the nation's 75 million homeowners, Hahn thanked Congressman Shaw and the other legislators who voted for the Communications Opportunity, Promotion and Enhancement (COPE) Act last week. The next step is for the U.S. Senate to consider similar legislation.

"I urge the U.S. Senate to act swiftly on their version of the House's COPE Act," continued Hahn. "Senator Nelson, as a member of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee has that ability. Today's hearing in the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee was integral to the efforts that will help consumers enjoy choice in video service providers and ultimately lower costs."

Hahn pointed out that the influence of the legislation would extend far beyond just competition in TV services. The same lines that bring video services to the home can also bring high-speed Internet services, voice communications, enhanced telecommuting services, home security services, health care monitoring and emergency response, distance learning and other educational initiatives.
