Sly Stallone, Joe Frazier, Superfighter Highlights At Boxing Gala
LAS VEGAS, May 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Superfighter played a key role at the 81st Annual Boxing Writers Association of America Awards dinner at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Resort in Las Vegas Friday, May 5, attended by more than 400 boxing luminaries and hosted by HBO boxing commentator Jim Lampley.
Superfighter provided sponsorship support and a video presentation featuring Roy Jones Jr., and celebrated boxing trainer, Angelo Dundee, endorsing the Superfighter event. A framed autographed Superfighter poster with signatures of scores of boxing celebrities who support the series earned $1000 at auction for the Boxing Writers charities.
Boxing notables attending included Sylvester Stallone, former Heavyweight Champion Joe Frazier, broadcasters Larry Merchant, Barry Tomkins, and Rich Marotta and "Superfighter" co-founder Warren Spooner. Stallone was recipient of the first ever Boxing Writers "Lifetime Cinematic Award".
"This exciting evening captured the imagination and excitement of the world of boxing and provided Superfighter with an opportunity to become an active part of this community," Spooner said.
Also honored was former middleweight champion Retired Boxers Foundation founder Alex Ramos. The Retired Boxers Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining the dignity and well being of former fighters. A portion of the proceeds of the Superfighter event will be donated to the RBF.
Superfighter will present eight world renowned heavyweights in a fierce elimination contest in Melbourne, Australia July 9th, 2006(airing Saturday, July 8 in North America). Each bout will last four three minute rounds with the winner advancing to successive bouts all in the same evening. The lone survivor will reign as Superfighter champion and earn the $5,000,000 purse.
The official launch of the new Superfighter boxing series will take place at Gotham Hall, 1356 Broadway at 34th St at 11:30 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time. All of the fighters in the July 9 tournament are expected to be on hand for the launch of this exciting and innovative boxing event.
