Alcohol Is Cause of Almost Half of All Treatment Admissions for Older Adults
Almost half of the admissions to substance abuse treatment among people age 50 and up were specifically for alcohol abuse (48 percent of 164,000 admissions in 2003). Men accounted for four of every five (80%) of these alcohol-specific admissions. These findings were released today in a report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration from continued analysis of the 2003 Treatment Episode Data Set.

New Cameras Boost Digital Switch
Attracted by a new generation of smaller, better and more affordable cameras, Americans are continuing the switch from film to digital imaging. A new national survey from electronics retailer Circuit City shows 71 percent of Americans who use film cameras are thinking of purchasing, or are actively shopping for a digital camera. The survey also shows 43 percent of families that already have digital cameras are considering an upgrade. Released just prior to Mother's Day, the survey identifies mom as the primary family photographer in 57 percent of American households. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) estimates more than half of U.S. households now own at least one digital camera.

Adolescents Not Getting Enough Sleep
A recent poll by the National Sleep Foundation found 80 percent of adolescents are not getting the optimal amount of sleep. A new Web site is designed to address trends like this. According to the Web site, the best advice for teens is a consistent routine: go to bed and get up at consistent times, even on weekends; get at least nine hours of sleep nightly; have a relaxing routine before bed, such as fun reading or taking a warm shower; keep TVs and other distractions out of the bedroom.
