Consumers for Cable Choice Launches Petition Drive; Asks Consumers to Push Congress to Pass Cable Choice This Year

WASHINGTON, May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers for Cable Choice (C4CC) today called on Americans to turn their cable complaints into action by signing a petition urging Congress to inject competition into the cable television market this year.

"Thousands of consumers across the country are desperately unhappy with their cable monopoly," said Robert K. Johnson, C4CC president. "Congress has legislation before it that could remedy this situation, but lawmakers could easily delay action unless constituents speak up."

C4CC posted a petition on its Web site yesterday urging Congress to make the enactment of a cable franchise reform bill a top priority this year. Without promotion, the C4CC petition, available at http://www.consumers4choice.org/ , has already attracted hundreds of signatures from across the country.

"There are many worthy issues before the Congress, and we are not discounting their importance. But cable franchise reform will help consumers save money almost immediately -- enough perhaps to allow them to better afford gasoline for their cars -- and it should be considered on its own," Johnson said.

The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee will hold hearings on May 18, 2006, and 25, 2006, to discuss the Communications, Consumers' Choice, and Broadband Deployment Act of 2006. The Communications, Opportunity, Promotion and Enhancement Act has been approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, but has yet to be assigned for debate on the House floor.

Johnson urged consumers to use the petition to voice their demand for choice.
