'That's England Alright' - Unofficial Challenge to England's World Cup Anthem
'That's England Alright' - Unofficial Challenge to England's World Cup Anthem
LONDON, April 6/PRNewswire/ -- As the world prepares for the biggest sporting challenge of 2006, the
thoughts of England supporters everywhere turn to our boys preparing for
battle. We wish them luck. We wish them success. And we wish that the FA
hadn't seen fit to lumber them with such a dreary, miserable dirge as their
'official anthem'.
This is no time for shoegazing indie schmindie melancholy! This is a time
for cheering, for nostalgia, and for celebrating everything that makes
England brilliant. Chips. Rain. Regional accents. Saying 'sorry' when someone
bumps into you. And above all, the underdog - the truth is that, just because
you're bigger doesn't mean you'll win. It took a humble bunch of footie fans
to realise this and to come up with their own unofficial anthem worthy of the
England squad: 'That's England Alright' (or, better known by its very English
acronym, TEA).
A reworking of the classic hit 'That's Livin' Alright' - the theme tune
to another great bastion of Britishness, Auf Wiedersehen Pet - TEA has been
recorded by the singer of the original track, Joe Fagin. The track has been
recorded by Clive Langer, the multi million selling producer who has worked
with Madness, Morrissey and Elvis Costello amongst others.
Joe, a big football fan, got to number 3 in 1984 with the original track
and knows that the new song will appeal to a new younger generation as well
as the parents who knew it first time around. "It's a song that captures the
spirit of the true England fan - whether they're over in Germany getting
behind the team or watching it in the pub back home" he says. "I hope it's
going to be the people's song".
Hear hear. Because after all, another forgettable FA 'anthem' for our
valiant boys? That's not alright. Swaying soberly in the stands to the gloomy
tones of moody Yorkshiremen? That's really not alright. Or, a foot-stomper
from Fagin and his lowly football fanatics? You know what that is... Here
begins another David and Goliath, and let's make sure this underdog comes out
on top...
And as for the England team... Auf Wiedersehen? Not yet.
