Musiwave Gets Into the Groove With More Than One Million Tracks Downloaded Each Month
Musiwave Continues to Gain Momentum With Operators Worldwide With More Than 22 Live Services and 55 Handset Models
LAS VEGAS, CTIA, April 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Musiwave, an Openwave company (Openwave Systems Inc.)(NASDAQ:OPWV) and a leading provider of mobile music entertainment services to operators and media companies worldwide, today announced more than one million full-length tracks per month are being downloaded over-the-air (OTA) using mobile music services powered by Musiwave. Musiwave services will be on display in Openwave's Booth #536 at CTIA 2006, being held April 5-7 in Las Vegas.
Musiwave first launched commercial mobile music services in July 2004. The Musiwave Music on Demand Service (MODS(TM)) allows fast, full-length and secure downloads of music directly to 2.5G and 3G mobile devices. Today's milestone was achieved collectively by the more than 22 mobile operators worldwide who use Musiwave MODS to power their mobile music services, with the exception of the United States and Asia-Pacific, which Musiwave is targeting in its expansion efforts.
"Our milestone is a testament to the popularity of mobile music, as well as the value that Musiwave brings to mobile operators in increasing subscriber value and creating an opportunity for new revenue streams," said Nicolas Pelletier, vice president, Musiwave. "Musiwave provides operators an innovative roadmap to deliver a high quality and easy to use user experience for consumers, including video downloading and streaming; convergent services, such as synchronization and dual downloading; and flexible service options, including subscription, rental and a la carte."
The market for full-track music downloads to mobile devices was twenty times larger at the end of 2005 than it was twelve months earlier, a new study from ABI Research has revealed. It found that global revenues from over-the-air (OTA) downloaded full track songs last year were $251 million, up from $12.4 million in 2004. ABI Research forecasts that by 2011 this figure will be $9.3 billion.(1)
Musiwave MODS supports more than 55 handset models with either native player implementations based on the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) 1.0 Digital Rights Management (DRM) standard or Java and Symbian music applications using various DRM providers, including the OMA 2.0 DRM implementation. Both implementations are designed to ensure ease-of-use for consumers. In addition, Musiwave's content programming tools, customer relationship management (CRM) services and marketing programs are designed to build strong usage across the platform.
Earlier this year Musiwave announced the addition of two major extensions to its music platform: the roll-out of a subscription-based mobile music service for France-based SFR and the first trial launch of Musiwave Smart Radio, which offers a customized streaming music experience, with French operator Orange. Musiwave also announced its first North American customer, TELUS, a leading Canadian telecommunications company, to deploy Musiwave's full-track music download service for its mobile phone subscribers.
