'La Chanson Realiste' to Spotlight Paris in the 1920s
NEW YORK, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Yvonne Constant, the exciting French entertainer, will be presenting her new one-woman show, "La chanson realiste" (Paris in the 1920s), at Danny's Skylight Room on March 28th and 30th, April 3rd and 5th. Russ Kassoff is the musical director.
A recipient of the prestigious Backstage Bistro Award for Outstanding Female Vocalist in 1988, Ms. Constant has been a regular fixture on the New York cabaret scene for the past two decades.
Reviewing her show in 2003, Rex Reed wrote, "Yvonne Constant ... has conviction and a certain je ne sais quoi ... [She] has charm, resolve, and the acting ability to make [the songs she sings] come alive in her own inimitable style. It doesn't hurt that she is also a sexy, sultry eyeful ... A delight in any language ... "
Her new show, "La chanson realiste" (Paris in the 1920s) takes a fresh look at a particularly active period in French chanson history, from 1920 to 1936, between the two World Wars, when a neo-realism in songwriting flourished, paving the way for such performers as Marie Dubas, Lys Gauty, Frehel, Damia, Marlene Dietrich, and ultimately Edith Piaf, who embodied the movement and carried it over to the 1950s and '60s.
Among the songs written at that time are renowned international hits "My Man," "Mon Legionnaire," and "Mon Gigolo." In her show, Ms. Constant vividly recreates the period itself, the "chanson realiste," and its most famous exponents bringing to it the style and talent that have distinguished her previous productions.
A resident of Paris and New York, Yvonne Constant received a Tony Award for her performance in "La Plume de Ma Tante," and has appeared on Broadway in "The Gay Life" and "No Strings." She appeared a record 45 times on the "Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." In 1990, the French government honored her with its Knight of Arts and Letters medal, in recognition of her work in promoting French culture in foreign countries.
