TVMyPod: The New Distribution Channel for Video iPods and DVDs
SOMERVILLE, Mass., Feb 2 /PRNewswire/ -- You've heard the buzz about the new video iPod. So you demo one at the local electronics store. It is an exquisite piece of equipment. No wonder Apple sold 14 million of them in the first two months.
But you've heard that it's very time-consuming and difficult to load your DVDs onto it.
There's a new service company called TVMyPod (http://www.tvmypod.com/) that will do it pretty much for free.
So you look online and find out that -- it's illegal?
Not so, says TVMyPod co-founder Vijay Raghavan.
"We provide a valuable service," says Raghavan. "You buy the DVDs. You buy the video iPod. We put your DVDs on the iPod for you. We save you a ton of time and a lot of hassle.
"We're sort of like a value-added reseller, except we're actually adding value -- your time."
But what about the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and authors and writers being denied royalties?
"We're actually helping authors and writers make more money," says David Onigman, Raghavan's partner.
"We're really a new distribution channel for iPods and for DVDs. We're adding to the weekly sales figures, not detracting from them."
What if someone already owns an iPod and wants to load copies of a couple of their videos onto it? How about if they send TVMyPod the iPod AND the videos?
"No can do," says Raghavan.
"We'll load new DVDs onto your existing iPod, but not your existing DVD collection," says Raghavan.
"We only load content from DVDs that you buy through us. We don't deal in used anything."
Isn't TVMyPod a lot like Napster, the little garage startup from the '90s that tried to do something similar by selling music over the Internet?
"This is different," says Onigman. "The key difference is the person who gets the end product is the original owner, the one who bought the hardware and also bought the content. We're a service company. Think of us as the first VSP, the first video-service providers."
And maybe a completely new distribution channel for the iPod and DVD industries.
