Serbia Broadband Launches DTH Service with Scientific-Atlanta's End-to-End DVB-S System

Serbia Broadband Launches DTH Service with Scientific-Atlanta's End-to-End DVB-S System

KORTRIJK, Belgium and ATLANTA, February 3/PRNewswire/ -- Following the successful creation of its hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) cable
network using Scientific-Atlanta Europe NV technology, Serbia Broadband -
Srpske Kablovske Mreze (SBB) has chosen additional Scientific-Atlanta(R)
products and systems to create its DVB-S DTH (direct-to-home) headend and
uplink.

"More than a million Serbian households are under-served when it comes to
entertainment; many can only receive a few local channels," said Dragan
Solak, chief executive of SBB. "Because it is impractical to try to reach all
of those homes using our cable system, we are launching a new direct-to-home
service to bring a variety of entertainment choices to our new customers."

SBB, Serbia's largest cable operator, will use Scientific-Atlanta
encoders at several local Serbian broadcasters to create video streams for
transport over an IP network to its new Scientific-Atlanta digital headend.
There, the local content will be combined with popular programming channels
to create an exciting entertainment experience for customers of the new DTH
service. Scientific-Atlanta equipment will also provide multiplexing and
transrating services to allow SBB to use transponder capacity efficiently.
Scientific-Atlanta's iLynx(TM) platform will be used to connect the headend
with the remote uplink site.

At the uplink site, Scientific-Atlanta is providing antennas,
upconverters and amplifiers to deliver signals to the satellite. Wiring,
installation and configuration for the entire transport, headend and uplink
capabilities are being conducted by Scientific-Atlanta's systems integrator,
professional services and consulting arm, SciCare(TM) EMEA Professional
Services. Additionally, a ROSA(TM) network and management and control system
in place to monitor the complete HFC network will be expanded to monitor the
DTH operation.

"We offer our customers a combination of a strong local presence and a
video delivery heritage that is second to none," said Dean Rockwell, vice
president and general manager, Transmission Network Systems, Europe at
Scientific-Atlanta. "SBB is continuing the trend we see in Eastern Europe as
service providers expand the availability of video, voice and data services.
We have the technology, experience and stability to deliver solutions which
are both cost effective and scaleable to meet the changing market
requirements and continue to help it grow."
