2006 TED Prize Winners Wishes Announced

Epidemiologist Larry Brilliant, Architecture for Humanity Cofounder Cameron Sinclair and Documentary Filmmaker Jehane Noujaim Reveal Three Wishes to Change the World

MONTEREY, Calif., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Larry Brilliant, Architecture for Humanity Cofounder Cameron Sinclair and documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim, recipients of the 2006 TED Prize, tonight revealed their much- anticipated wishes to change the world at the 2006 TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) Conference.

Now in its second year, The TED Prize awards recipients one wish to change the world, $100,000.00 each in grant money, and the ongoing support of the TED Community, a group of more than 900 catalysts for change ranging from Fortune 500 executives to dedicated non-profit professionals. After wishes are revealed, TED Attendees are invited to participate in wish fulfillment, and in the process, encourage positive global change. 2006 TED Prize winners and their wishes include:

Physician and Epidemiologist Dr. Larry Brilliant announced his wish to develop a powerful, first of its kind early warning system to protect the world from pandemics. Brilliant, the newly appointed Executive Director of Google.org, believes an integrated system of web-crawlers could detect unusual patterns of information on the Internet, that might provide the first indication of dangerous infectious diseases and other public health nightmares.

Cameron Sinclair, Cofounder and executive director of Architecture for Humanity, has wished to create a new type of "open-source design" database that will allow architects, funders, NGOs and others to share housing solutions globally. Architecture for Humanity is a six-year-old charitable organization seeking architectural solutions to humanitarian crises and providing design services to communities in need.

Jehane Noujaim, award winning documentary filmmaker, has wished for support in dedicating a single day each year to viewing powerful independent films across the globe simultaneously, in the interest of bringing the world together by inspiring cultural understanding and awareness of our shared humanity. Noujaim is responsible for films that include Startup.com and Control Room, a groundbreaking documentary on the Arab news network Al Jazeera.

"Each year, the TED Prize aims to honor individuals who we believe can inspire the TED community -- and others -- to do something truly great," says Chris Anderson, Curator of the TED Conference. "Larry, Cameron and Jehane have revealed wishes with the potential for enormous global impact. And already the response we're hearing from TEDsters suggests they each have a credible shot at realizing their dreams. If so, this will be the year that people really come to understand the potential for TED and the TED Prize to make a difference in the world."

Past recipients of the TED Prize include Bono, medical devices inventor Dr.Robert Fischell, and Canadian photo-artist Edward Burtynsky.
