HADDON HEIGHTS, N.J., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- James Blunt's video "You're Beautiful" was added to Singingfool.com's streaming video playlist on October 7, 2005 during his CD Back To Bedlam release week. In just that month, the video garnered 121,572 plays. In November, the video received 253,148 plays and in December 364,939 plays. Blunt subsequently showed up on the Billboard's "Hot Digital Song" charts at number 4 in 2005 and his album is currently enjoying 15 weeks on Billboard's "Top 200" sales charts climbing this week to number 13.
When MTV began on cable in the early 80's, they were claiming a network dedicated to playing music videos 24 hours a day. New artists started making low-budget videos for the network just to get exposure since they were not getting plays from mainstream radio. Bigger acts just ignored the cable-based channel, discounting the small audience that did not seem to warrant the expense of producing a music video.
From the small screen sprang acts such as Elvis Costello, The Fixx, R.E.M., Madonna, The Police and many others that radio had ignored. Music videos reached a new kind of music enthusiast who not only watched those videos but also purchased these artists' albums. As everybody knows, MTV eventually became part of the establishment showing only videos from overexposed and established acts, their audience dwindled and they began to pursue reality TV shows. As a result, new artists had a difficult time breaking into the mainstream that was dominated by the likes of Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys.
With the proliferation of broadband connections in the last few years, new artists such as James Blunt, My Chemical Romance, Ying Yang Twins and Children of Bodom are again using videos to find their audience online. Singingfool.com, a leading independent streaming music video website, sees a direct correlation between an artist's video plays and their music sales.
Jed Horovitz, Managing Member of Singingfool.com says "Reaching our 3.8 million US monthly visitors has a positive impact on an sales. We can see which artist is going to hit big based on our user's selection. Music videos are again playing a critical role in breaking new artists but it's happening online. Labels that maximize streaming video, such as Atlantic and Warner Brothers Records, are enjoying greater market share."
