Rollergirls - America's Newest Roll Models Premiere on A & E January 2; EMMY(R) Winning Austin Production Company Launches Second TV Series
AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Rollergirls premiering on A&E January 2, 2006 (10:00 p.m./9:00 CST) is a reality based drama, but doesn't resemble anything in the reality genre. Texas-based production company Action Figure teamed up with MTV's Laguna Beach famed Gary Auerbach as co-executive producers to create 13 one-hour episodes of Rollergirls. The first episode, seen through the eyes of rookie-rollergirl Venus Envy, introduces the duality between the Rollergirls' superhero personas on the track and their daily lives.
"We wanted to show how powerful these women are, some of them teachers, lawyers, and students by day, all of them hellions by night," said Mark Miks, director and principal at Action Figure. "We employed techniques learned from Gary Auerbach's Laguna Beach and kept the cameras farther away from the subjects utilizing the longer end of the lens for beauty and keeping the performances natural and real."
The TXRD (TXRD) Lonestar Rollergirls, a skater-owned and operated league, knew the value of their story as six production companies vied for broadcast rights. Action Figure and Go Go Luckey won the battle for media rights by showing just how much they understood the Rollergirls' unique world. Action Figure's experience in branded content added an extra edge, as the League was determined to choose a partner that could help them stay true to their image.
"Action Figure delivered a pitch tape that blew our minds," said Chola, team captain for the Lonestar Rollergirls team Putas Del Fuego. "It was raw and rough and so dead on. They delivered the real Texas Roller Derby on screen, not a glamorized version of us. They just got it!"
Action Figure is best known for the production of all-screens media campaigns for Wal-Mart, Airforce and Southwest Airlines. A recent branding campaign promoting Austin's unique downtown culture lead to the creation of another TV series, the EMMY Award winning Downtown, which launches its second season in March 2006 on Austin's PBS affiliate KLRU.
Rollergirls premieres Monday, January 2 at 10:00 p.m. EST/9:00 p.m. CST.
