Ameriprise Financial Wishes Baby Boomers a Happy 60th Birthday
Unique advertisement focuses on 77 million baby boomers approaching retirement
MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- On Jan. 1 the first of 77 million baby boomers will turn 60 and to celebrate this milestone Ameriprise Financial will launch a television ad with a familiar tune. Legendary musician, Snuffy Walden, will perform a unique rendition of "Happy Birthday" in a new broadcast advertisement for Ameriprise Financial that captures the passion and creativity that the baby boomer generation is expected to bring to its approaching retirement.
The broadcast ad, which runs in both a 15 second and 30 second format, will debut on Jan. 1 shortly after midnight on the east coast in three network programs: "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" on ABC, "New Year's Eve with Carson Daly" on NBC, and "New Year's Eve Live (With Regis Philbin) on FOX. The spots will air almost 500 times during the first two weeks of January appearing on network programming such as "CSI: Miami" and "Dancing with the Stars" as well as cable channels including CNN, MSNBC and Lifetime Television among others.
In 2006 the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that baby boomers will turn 60 at the rate of over 7,900 every day and 330 every hour. Ameriprise Financial Chief Economist Dan Laufenberg turns 60 on Jan. 15. As one of the first baby boomers to reach this milestone he has both a personal and professional interest in the economics of the 77 million baby boomers approaching retirement.
"I'm part of a unique generation that has a lot of different ideas about retirement. Whether our goal is to retire early or just change the focus of how we spend our time, we will have to make choices based on an evolving economic reality," says Laufenberg. "As both an economist and a baby boomer, I want to know what sort of economy I'll be living in during my retirement years. We already have a lot of data, the question is 'what can we learn from it now to help our clients live the way they want in the years ahead?'"
This generation's retirement will look different from their parents; they will reinvent retirement with a focus on activity over idleness and work for pleasure rather than need. Over the next decade, an unprecedented proportion of Americans will be entering retirement generating more than $1 trillion in annual disbursements of retirement assets. Ameriprise Financial's new advertisement is part of a larger campaign that supports the company's core commitment to helping baby boomers navigate through retirement's challenges and remain financially secure.
About Baby Boomers
The term "baby boomer" describes the generation of Americans born between the years 1946 to 1964. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates over 77 million baby boomers alive today with females making up a slightly larger percentage of the population than men (50.8 percent and 49.2 percent respectively). In 2030, there is projected to be over 57 million baby boomers between the ages of 66 to 84. Reflecting the rising age of the baby boomers, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that by the year 2014 the number of people in the labor force ages 55 to 64 will increase by seven million. The number of people in the labor force age 65 and older will increase seven times as fast as the total labor force due, in part, to workers postponing retirement. By 2031, all baby boomers will be over age 65 and have access to Social Security benefits. In this year, the Social Security Administration estimates that there will be 2.1 workers for each Social Security beneficiary; currently, there are 3.3 workers for each beneficiary.
