Michel Gondry and Mill Group Post Recent White Stripes Music Video

NEW YORK, Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Working at The Mill NY, internationally-acclaimed director Michel Gondry has just completed his fourth mind-bending video for the White Stripes. This time around he conceived Denial Twist as an unbalanced take on a day in the life of Jack and Meg White.

Gondry's idea was to create a sensory illusion of various warped and distorted excursions throughout New York City. Jack and Meg walk through various sets -- an appearance on The Conan O'Brian show, a drive through Times Square and finally to their "home" where they host Conan for tea. The sets look normal, while the characters appear stretched and squashed.

The most unique feature of this video is that it was composed as one continuous take -- one shot that begins and ends on Conan's set, with many sets in between. To achieve this, Gondry and his team built an anamorphically-adjusted set where the props, furniture and background were all half or double their normal height. From there, Gondry turned to Mill NY Flame Artists Angus Kneale and Richard de Carteret to expand and compress both the rooms and characters to give a distorted feel to the piece. The visual effects team created transitions between the various sets and brought seamless enhancements to provide the extra touches that could not be established during production.

The masterpiece of the project is the set creation for the final scene developed by Mill NY's talented CG team. Their work involved extensive tracking, 3D reconstruction and match-moving shots -- a result of the fact that the video was shot on steadicam -- so no repeatable movements were possible. Denial Twist was finished in HD to ensure a resolution that would retain the maximum detail for the optical effects Gondry and The Mill created.

A world-leading visual effects company with headquarters in London and NY, The Mill utilized the Discreet Flame, Thomson Spirit and Maya XSI for this project, in collaboration with production company, Partizan.

Michel Gondry's relationship with The Mill New York began with post- production work on various scenes for his 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Since then they have collaborated on two other MTV award-nominated music videos including The White Stripes' The Hardest Button to Button and Steriogram's Walkie Talkie Man.
