For a dedicated band of the world's most highly acclaimed winter sports
athletes, skiing and snowboarding keeps reaching new heights. This year's
Warren Miller ski action film, Higher Ground, chronicles their adventures in
their never ending search for new and thrilling ways to explore the mountains
and 'ride' the snow. The search crisscrosses the globe, from Lake Tahoe, to
Alaska, onto Aspen, Vail, Chamonix, Courcheval and Engelberg, with scenes
even shot on USS Nimitz - one of the USA navy's nuclear powered aircraft
carriers.
Max Bervy, Higher Ground's director, says, "Skiers and snowboarders
constantly stretch and push limits; physical, emotional and gravitational.
With Higher Ground we set out to capture those limit-breaking moments and get
a glimpse behind what higher ground means to each athlete. For some, it means
jumping off a 280-foot cliff wearing skis and a parachute, for others it's
the triumph of skiing deep powder, for others it's being pulled up hill on
skis at over 80mph by a ski-doo!"
Part action/adventure, part documentary, Warren Miller's Higher Ground is
90 minutes of heart-stopping action featuring skiing and snowboarding legends
like Olympian Jeremy Bloom and famously mohawked mogul skier, Glen Plake, as
well as five year old phenomenon, Bridger Gile. The film is broken into
vignettes, allowing each skier to define higher ground in their own right.
Higher Ground will also break cinematic history as the UK's first-ever
high-definition nationwide film tour. The true cinematic widescreen format
will bring fans even deeper into the heart of the mountains, bringing skiing
and snowboarding to life on the big screen. Higher Ground took two years to
film with over 200 athletes involved worldwide.
Along with adrenaline-filled action and magnificent scenery, Higher
Ground delivers a high-energy soundtrack on a state-of-the-art digital sound
system. The national tour of Higher Ground is presented by Nissan and
co-sponsored by The Independent, Columbia Sportswear, Ski Lake Tahoe, Zoom
Airlines, World Ski and the Ski Club of Great Britain.
Higher Ground will play in cinemas nationwide from October 2005 to
December 2005 as a limited release - a 63 date tour of the UK - with stops in
more than 40 towns and cities. Jim Odoire, the film tour organiser, says, "We
have significantly increased the number of screenings compared to last year
as the Warren Miller film genre gains popularity. These festival-like
showings often arrive in town for one night only yet Warren Miller films have
developed a dedicated cult following with some 1 million attending screenings
worldwide each year. And 75% of the audiences return year after year."
Warren Miller films are so much more than just going to the cinema. Now
in their 57th year, these annual ski-fests mark the beginning on the
ski/snowboarding season. It's an excuse to get together with friends and
herald the start of the new winter season together.
Warren Miller's Higher Ground film crew have joined forces with the
film's sponsors, local retailers and ski clubs to bring viewers a mini ski
expo every night. Everyone attending gets a 'goodie bag' stuffed full of
freebies along with the chance to take advantage of great offers and win big
prizes during the interval draw. These include Warren Miller compilation
DVDs, sunglasses, snowboards and skis, Palm Treo 650 smartphones, clothing,
stickers, ski holidays - the list goes on.
