"BigBand Networks provides infrastructure that addresses the diverse interests and high quality service expectations of the Shekou Cable subscriber base," said Mr. Liu Qingqing, the vice director of Shekou Cable. "Several options were considered to support the Shekou Cable digital launch, and BigBand Networks' platform approach best addresses current and anticipated needs."

Shekou Cable is introducing digital programming from a range of local and international feeds accessed at its headend facility in Shenzen. The BigBand BMR controls the line-up of offerings provided, as well as the video quality and bandwidth efficiency of each program. In sync with its digital television launch, Shekou Cable is also making on-demand offerings available. The BigBand BME connects by Gigabit Ethernet to VOD servers providing this content, and routes programs towards their appropriate live subscribers, with performance of edge QAM modulation for compatibility with customer premises devices.

"Shekou Cable is marking itself as an advanced operator by launching a broad suite of digital services based on intelligent management through BigBand Networks' platform approach," said Richard Chau, vice president and general manager of BigBand Networks Asia-Pacific. "Success with Shekou Cable is an important milestone for BigBand Networks' participation in the growing Chinese market of rich services provided over broadband networks."

Shekou Cable is BigBand Networks' second major customer announced in China this year, following Nanjing Radio and Television Network Company.
