WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 Awarded NAB Education Foundation Service to America Television Award

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 received the Service to America Television Award, Monday, June 13th at the seventh annual Service to America Summit, hosted by the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF). The award was presented to Channel 7's Vice President and General Manager, Grace Gilchrist, Programming Director, Marla Drutz, and Public Affairs Director Chuck Stokes in a ceremony held at the Ronald Reagan building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. The gala event recognized and celebrated the outstanding community service by local broadcasters.

The Service to America Television Award recognizes a television station for the totality of its efforts and its commitment to excellence in serving its community. WXYZ-TV received the award for its outstanding work and consistent local commitment to the community through its four major campaigns including, "Project Healthy Living" and "Project Healthy Living for Kids" -- lifelines for people with limited access to healthcare. The other two programs are "Operation Can Do" -- providing 1.1 million meals for the hungry in 2004 alone; and "Brightest and Best" -- which honors over 250 graduating seniors at the top of their class in a series of promotional spots that air on the station all summer.

The award also recognized WXYZ-TV's commitment to community through its local news coverage and local programs, including the weekly public affairs program "Spotlight on the News" which recently marked its 40th anniversary of exploring local, state and national issues.

"WXYZ has made community service a signature asset of our station. Each year, we touch and improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of metro Detroiters through our wide range of on-going community service projects. This is the most prestigious award honoring excellence in community service, and it is especially gratifying to receive national recognition from the NAB. I am extremely proud of my great team that works to make these programs so successful," said WXYZ Vice President and General Manager Grace Gilchrist.

The National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the public interest in supporting and advocating: education and training programs, strategies to increase diversity, initiatives stressing the importance of the First Amendment, community service, philanthropy, and other timely broadcasting issues.
