Comcast Awards More Than $200,000 in Scholarship Money to Maryland Area High School 2005 Graduating Seniors

Regional Comcast Student Achievement Awards and National Comcast Foundation Scholarship Program Fuels Effort to Support Higher Education

Nearly $1 Million Invested in Scholarships Since Company Began First Program

BALTIMORE, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Comcast today announced that it has awarded more than $200,000 in scholarship money to students in Maryland from the 2005 graduating class through the Comcast Student Achievement Awards program and the Comcast Foundation Leaders & Achievers Program.

The Student Achievement Awards program provides a $1,000 scholarship to one graduating senior from each Maryland public high school located in areas serviced by Comcast (Attached is a list of high schools and recipients). Comcast has sponsored the Student Achievement Awards program in Maryland each spring since 1992, and has awarded nearly $1 million in scholarship money across the state of Maryland since the program's inception. This year, Comcast is awarding 144 Student Achievement Awards for a total of $144,000 of support for Maryland students

"Corporate support of higher education is critical and it's been exciting to see the Student Achievement Awards program grow across Maryland since it began 13 years ago. I am proud that this year, Comcast Student Achievement Awards have been presented to one student from each of Maryland's high schools in the areas we serve. Through this effort, 144 students will receive financial help from Comcast to help pay for a higher education," said Barbara A. Gehrig, senior vice president of Comcast's Maryland-Delaware region. "The more we can do to support learning, the better our workforce will be in the future."

The Comcast Student Achievement Awards recognize outstanding students who have achieved extraordinary academic results and shown personal growth over their high school careers. Recipients of this scholarship are students who have shown the most improvement during their time in high school. A committee review board made up of teachers and counselors from each high school determines the winners.

Additionally, as part of a separate scholarship program, Comcast will award area high school seniors $1,000 through the Comcast Foundation Leaders & Achievers Program. This scholarship program recognizes high school seniors who have demonstrated a strong commitment to community service and leadership. Area high school principals submit nominations to The Scholarship Foundation and entries are judged individually with more than one student eligible to win from any school. This year, the Comcast Foundation awarded 58 scholarships totaling $58,000 throughout Maryland (A list of these recipients is also attached). In 2004, the Comcast Foundation donated more than $1 million to graduating seniors across the nation as part of this program.

"The talented young men and women who are recipients of the 2005 Comcast Student Achievement Awards and the Comcast Foundation Leaders and Achievers Scholarships are perfect examples of the thousands of individual success stories happening in our public schools every day," said Nancy S. Grasmick, State Superintendent of Schools. "Comcast understands that it is the students of today who will define the workplace of tomorrow. By helping these deserving students achieve their goals of furthering their education, and making the unprecedented commitment to every public high school in the jurisdictions Comcast serves, Comcast is once again showing itself as a true friend of Maryland education."
