Charter Taps Kasenna for VOD Servers

Charter Taps Kasenna for VOD Servers

MediaBase XMP Provides Solution for Great Lakes Markets

ST. LOUIS and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:CHTR) and Kasenna, Inc. today announced the deployment of Kasenna's MediaBase(TM) XMP video servers in Eau Claire, Wis. and Rochester and St. Cloud, Minn. Using standards-based hardware, the Kasenna servers are being deployed in response to the growing popularity of Charter OnDemand(TM), an expansive and growing library of movies, premium channel hits, sports, music and other programs that start whenever a customer wants.

Charter had previously deployed the MediaBase(TM) XMP video servers to upgrade and expand capacity in the Madison, Fond du Lac and Janesville, Wis. markets.

"As we continue to expand our video-on-demand offering, we have found that it is both feasible and more cost-effective to implement solutions based on open standards," said Pragash Pillai, Charter Vice President of Engineering, Digital Video. "With Kasenna servers, Charter can reduce the complexity of building and integrating proprietary systems. Their servers also offer the kind of scalability and interoperability across a broad portion of our networks that our operations demand."

These six deployments follow Charter's installation of MediaBase servers to support the initial rollout of VOD services in Malibu, Calif. last June, using the C-COR nABLE demand management system. Kasenna's cable market partner, N2 Broadband, facilitated these new deployments for Charter.

"Charter Communications has been one of the pioneers in advanced video services, and we are happy to be a partner in their migration from proprietary to open video delivery systems," said Kasenna CEO and Chairman Mark Gray. "We believe that eventually, all video systems will be built around open standards that reduce costs and facilitate rapid development of new services. Charter is helping to lead the cable industry in that evolution."
