SiRF GPS Technology Drives Navigation in New Mio 136 Portable Navigation System

SiRF GPS Technology Drives Navigation in New Mio 136 Portable Navigation System

SiRFstarII and SiRFXTrac(R) Power the New Portable Navigator/MP3 Player

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SiRF Technology Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:SIRF), a leading provider of GPS enabled location technology, today announced yet another win in the portable navigation market with the Mio 136 Navigation System, a fully portable personal navigator and MP3 player. SiRF's SiRFstarIIe/LP GPS chip set and its premium high sensitivity SiRFXtrac software, an industry standard technology combination for mainstream GPS portable navigation products, provides the location capabilities that enable Mio 136 users to navigate and find their way, even in challenging environments.

The Mio 136, initially introduced in the overseas market, was recently launched in the United States as a leading portable automotive navigation product that can be conveniently mounted on the dashboard of the car. The product has earned kudos for its elegant interface, easy to read 320 x 240 touch screen, and attractive price. The Mio 136 provides turn-by-turn directions, both spoken and visual, to any address in its database, covering the North American continent and Hawaii. Drivers making a wrong turn will be provided with a 'quickest route' to get back on track, while the embedded MP3 player will make the driving experience more pleasant.

"The GPS technology choice for Mio 136 was easy," said Michael Hsu, marketing manager and spokesperson for Mio Technology Ltd. "Mio Technology has already deployed SiRF technology into several portable GPS devices with success and as SiRF's chip sets and firmware support is world class, this choice was obvious."

"With the strong market demand for the GPS enabled portable navigation systems, we believe Mio continues to demonstrate how location-enabled products are permeating the mainstream consumer market," said Kanwar Chadha, founder and vice president of marketing for SiRF Technology. "Our strategic alliance with Mio will help them unveil an ever wider array of products to make life easier and more convenient for consumers the world over."

The combination of SiRFstarIIe/LP GPS chip set and SiRFXTrac premium high sensitivity software, with its ability to track signals quickly and accurately, is expected to provide Mio 136 users with reliable location information in challenging environments. The SiRFXtrac premium high sensitivity software enables the chip set to acquire and continue tracking GPS signals at far lower signal levels than traditional GPS solutions. As a result, the Mio 136 can be used in environments previously deemed inaccessible, such as in urban canyons, under dense foliage and in other challenging conditions, providing rapid, accurate and reliable location, speed and heading information.

As an industry standard for mainstream GPS, the SiRFstarIIe/LP is optimized for mobile navigation devices such as the Mio 136. With an embedded ARM7 TDMI microprocessor, the SiRFstarIIe/LP can incorporate additional functionality and features such as SiRF's adaptive TricklePower(TM) advanced power management technology for reduced power consumption or SiRF's SiRFDRive(TM) dead reckoning application for enhanced positioning accuracy and availability. The complementary SiRFXtrac premium high sensitivity software extends the operating range in which GPS can be used, increasing the versatility of GPS-enabled products such as automotive navigation products, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other location-aware consumer devices.
