SOUTHPORT, Conn., May 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Everett Raymond Kinstler is perhaps America's most acclaimed portrait artist. His work hangs in universities, private collections and the White House. Now his life story is coming to PBS: Through the end of the year, "Everett Raymond Kinstler: An Artist's Journey," produced by Dianne B. Bernhard and directed by Colin P. Russell, will air on PBS stations nationwide.

The film takes an in-depth look at Kinstler's life and career, featuring interviews with President and Mrs. Gerald Ford, Tony Bennett, Carol Burnett and writer Tom Wolfe. It examines an art career that has spanned more than 50 years and has influenced art and artists worldwide. Presented by the Art Spirit Foundation (http://www.artspiritfoundation.org/), broadcast of "Everett Raymond Kinstler: An Artist's Journey" is made possible by the American Public Television Exchange Program.
"'Everett Raymond Kinstler: An Artist's Journey' is a provocative documentary that invites the viewer into the life of one of America's most important artists," explained Bernhard, a renowned artist and art patron and founder of the Art Spirit Foundation. "The film takes us inside Mr. Kinstler's New York City studio at the historic National Arts Club as he paints and speaks about his life's work."
Kinstler was just 16 when he began drawing comic books, including Zorro and The Shadow, but soon established himself as a portraitist. He has won numerous awards and is shown in some of the country's foremost galleries, including the National Portrait Gallery, in Washington, D.C., which houses over 50 of his pieces in its permanent collection. Of Kinstler, musician and artist Tony Bennett has said, "I don't think there's been a better portrait artist since [John Singer] Sargent."
Though the non-profit Art Spirit Foundation has long promoted artists and the arts, "Everett Raymond Kinstler: An Artist's Journey" is the Foundation's first film. It is representative of Art Spirit's work, though, said Bernhard: "The Art Spirit Foundation aspires to elevate society's perspective of art and transform the way artists view themselves by presenting not only their work, but the artists' character as well," she explained. "'An Artist's Journey' does just that."
