By 55-40 Percent, New Jersey Favors Marriage for Gays, the State's Highest Support Ever, Bucking National Trend; 49 Percent Would Consider Voting for Jim McGreevey Again
Bucking the national trend, New Jersey's support for marriage for same-sex couples is at its highest point ever, according to a Garden State Equality-Zogby just released poll of 804 New Jersey voters. The poll's 55-40 percent pro-gay marriage result is virtually identical to that of Zogby's July 2003 New Jersey poll, whose result was 55-41 percent. North, Central and South Jersey are each at about 55 percent pro-gay marriage in the new poll. By 61-33 percent, nearly a 2-to-1 margin, New Jersey voters oppose the idea of the legislature's putting on the ballot a measure to ban gay marriage. And by 81-19 percent, New Jersey voters say the legislature has more important priorities than to spend time trying to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot to ban gay marriage. 68 percent of New Jerseyans say they hold that view strongly.

Mental Illness Stigmas Are Receding, But Misconceptions Remain
The diagnosis of a mental illness no longer carries the fear or shame it once did, according to a survey released by the American Psychiatric Association. Nearly 90 percent of Americans surveyed correctly believe that people with mental illness can live healthy lives and an overwhelming majority feels confident that mental health treatment works. Study findings also show that nearly 70 percent of people surveyed view going to a psychiatrist as a sign of strength. Despite this very positive news, however, there are still some grave misconceptions to address. Each year in the United States, 1 in 5 adults are diagnosed with a mental illness, yet the same proportion of adults say they would not see a psychiatrist under any circumstances. In addition, a majority of those surveyed are not concerned about themselves or a family member ever having to deal with a mental illness. This is troubling news considering that a 1 in 5 incidence rate means that few American families are ever untouched by mental illness.

The concert will be free and open to the Cuban public. In the past, the open air venue has accommodated up to 1 million people. The performance, the first open air concert by a U-S rock band in Cuba, was authorized by the U-S Treasury Department and the Instituto Cubano de la Musica.
