VH1 Takes A Look At "When Jerry Springer Ruled The World"
Premiering Saturday May 7th 10PM*
Premiering Saturday May 7th 10PM* "When Jerry Springer Ruled The World" recounts the story of television's most outrageous show ... a cultural phenomenon that changed the face of daytime TV and made Jerry Springer an international icon. VH1 captures the moment in history when Jerry went from talk show host to global star. It was a time when daytime talk shows were in decline and wanna-be hosts came and went like reality shows do today. But by the end of 1997 everybody - critics, teenagers, grandmothers, even the President of the United States - was talking about Jerry. The adrenaline- fueled "circus" drew its biggest numbers in history, and the mild mannered ex- mayor and TV anchor suddenly found his program in a horse race with Oprah Winfrey for the daytime crown.
And that was only the beginning. Within a year Jerry would become a lightning rod for critics, who accused his show of hastening the end of modern civilization. And yet his viewership continued to soar, and soon Jerry was greeted everywhere he went with chants of "Jerry, Jerry!!" How did this happen? Springer Ruled will fondly recall all the trappings of Jerry - the memorable episodes, the "final thoughts," the popular security staff and the Jerry beads. It will also examine the enduring impact of Springer on the popular culture and show how, in its 14th season, the Jerry Springer Show outlasted nearly every talk show on the dial.
