Clay & Glass Taste of Royal Oak Festival June 18 & 19

ROYAL OAK, Mich., May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The electronic, acid jazz genius of NYC's "Tortured Soul" will make their exclusive Detroit area appearance this year in Downtown Royal Oak on Saturday, June 18 as headliners of the 11th Annual Clay & Glass Taste of Royal Oak Festival on Washington Avenue. Barry Manilow says "Tortured Soul are breaking some rules and keeping me, as a musician, interested." While Lenny Kravitz adds "Tortured Soul's 'Don't Hold Me Down' sounds like a happy track I'd wake up to on a Saturday morning with the sun coming through the window. I like the Roy Ayers feeling to it." On Sunday, June 19, Detroit's award-winning Black Bottom Collective will headline the festival at 5pm for a special Father's Day performance.

A program of the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce, more than 50,000 people will attend the free festival with expanded hours, more art, more music and more food on Saturday, June 18 (10am-9pm) and Sunday, June 19, Father's Day -- 11am-7pm. More than 130 of the country's premier artists in the clay & glass mediums have been selected by a jury of their peers to join 10 of Royal Oak's best restaurants and a non-stop roster of the regions' best jazz, acid jazz, blues and funk music during this two-day festival. According to Sunshine Arts Magazine, this juried festival is one of the top 200 art shows in the nation, and is the only art show exclusively promoting clay and glass. Locally, Clay & Glass draws thousands to Downtown Royal Oak and, according to a 2005 marketing survey of Downtown Royal Oak businesses, 86% of businesses reported the Clay & Glass Festival as #1 in terms of positive impact on their business.

"This is our Downtown's #1 event," says Royal Oak Mayor Jim Ellison, "Royal Oak showcases its best and families, singles and seniors come from all over metro Detroit to enjoy the festival," he says. "The addition of food and music in 2004 added just the right elements to help grow attendance," says Agu Nwosu, Manager of Fifth Avenue and a major event sponsor.
