WHYY Hosts Forum About ETHICAL DILEMMAS AT THE END OF LIFE; Art Caplan to Deliver Keynote Address
WHAT: WHYY Wider Horizons and the Caring Community coalition will host
LIVING WITH GRIEF: ETHICAL DILEMMAS AT THE END OF LIFE, an all-day forum
on the ethical dilemmas that can arise at the end of life, including
issues faced by Terry Schiavo's family. The morning session will feature
a keynote address by medical ethicist Art Caplan, Ph.D., and an expert
panel discussion that will explore the end of life issues faced by
individuals, their families, and health care professionals, including
decisions concerning those with physical and mental disabilities. In the
afternoon, participants will watch the Hospice Foundation of America's
Twelfth Annual Living with Grief Teleconference, hosted by Cokie
Roberts, National Public Radio Senior News Analyst and ABC News
Correspondent. The teleconference will offer constructive advice to
those who are facing the difficult circumstances that surround caring
for someone who is dying. The entire day's events will be webcast live

WHEN: Wednesday, April 20, 2005 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Keynote
address by Art Caplan is 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.
WHERE: WHYY, Independence Mall West, 150 N. Sixth Street, Philadelphia
WHO: Art Caplan, Ph.D., Chair, Department of Medical Ethics, and
Director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania,
will give an overview of the past, present and future of end of life
issues. John Goodill, M.D., Director of Pain Management and Palliative
Care Program, Christiana Care Health System, will present the health
professionals' perspective and provide an ethical framework for the
day's discussion. Other panelists include Michele Mathes, J.D., attorney
and consultant on long-term care and ethics; Debra J. Lynn-McHale, a
postdoctoral fellow from Yale University; and Joan Menocal, a community
member, who will discuss the personal experiences and ethical issues at
the end of life. Lowell Arye, M.S.S.A., Executive Director, Alliance for
the Betterment of Citizens with Disabilities, as well as Jeffrey
Kauffman, Instructor, Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work and Kim
Overby, M.D., Medical Director, Elwyn, Inc., will lead a discussion on
the special circumstances that can be faced by individuals with physical
and/or mental disabilities at end of life.
