Unprecedented Study Details Spanish-Language Network Coverage of 2004 Elections
WHAT: For the first time, a comprehensive analysis of
Spanish-language TV network coverage of US politics will be
unveiled.
Researchers from the Lear Center Local News Archive, a project
of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and the
University of Wisconsin, in collaboration with the Pew Hispanic
Center, studied network and local news coverage by Univision
and Telemundo stations in Los Angeles, Miami and New York in
the weeks leading up to the 2004 local and national U.S.
elections. The study offers analysis of the content and
quantity of political coverage available to Spanish-speaking
American audiences in comparison to the major broadcast
networks that serve the English-speaking population: ABC, CBS
and NBC.

DETAILS: Since 1998, the Lear Center Local News Archive has tracked
local TV coverage of politics in the weeks leading up to
mid-term and presidential elections. In June 2004, FCC
Chairman Michael Powell and Sen. John McCain, using Lear Center
research, challenged all broadcasters to provide "local
communities with significant information on the political
issues facing the community, candidates' campaign platforms,
and candidate debates." The report on English-language TV
coverage was released Tuesday, Feb. 15 in Washington at a press
conference held by Sen. McCain. This study provides the first
such assessment of Spanish-language television news in the U.S.
