Super "Commercial" Sunday:
Searches for Super Bowl Commercials hit the roof, with an increase of more than 2,800 percent. For fear of causing any hint of commercial indecency this year, the commercials were "tamer" than usual, although one commercial did cause a big stir online: the spot for GoDaddy. Searches for GoDaddy are up 555 percent over the past 48 hours. According to the company, GoDaddy bought two commercial spots during the Super Bowl, but after the first one aired, the NFL pressured FOX to pull the second spot, which they did. In a smart marketing move, GoDaddy immediately made the commercial available online, with the added bonus of extra exclusive footage. The Super Bowl (#14) itself made its annual appearance on the list. Over the past 48 hours since the big game, Super Bowl searches have surged, but there is no comparing the traffic to last year's "wardrobe malfunction" which still continues to be the most-searched event in the history of The Lycos 50. The only athlete to make a touchdown with web users is the three-time Super Bowl champion, Tom Brady. Brady's search activity is up 800 percent, as he solidified his celebrity status by appearing on David Letterman last night, proving again why he is such a hit with fans online, and on the field.
Harry Potter Magic Hoax:
Search activity for Harry Potter (#10) increased more than 350 percent, propelling Potter into the top 10 this week, after weeks of hovering near the bottom of the list, and closely falling off The Lycos 50 after 239 continuous weeks. Potter searches increased dramatically after a web site began offering what it alleged to be an e-book version of the upcoming Potter book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The website has since been shut down. The book is due to hit shelves in worldwide release in July.
Other Notes of Interest:
Former Playboy Playmate and "Baywatch" babe Alicia Rickter (#46) made her debut on The Lycos 50 this week, with a 460 percent jump in searches after Rickter married New York Mets slugger Mike Piazza in a candle light church ceremony in South Florida. Bride's maids included fellow Playboy Playmates Brande Roderick and Lisa Dergan and "Baywatch" babe Angelica Bridges. Also in attendance was former Mets pitcher Al Leiter and Ivan Rodriguez of the Detroit Tigers. Meanwhile, another Baywatch, Playboy idol and search icon, Pam Anderson (#2) jumped to the coveted number two spot on this week's list. After turning down Teri Hatcher's award-winning role on Desperate Housewives, Anderson recently signed a FOX Television sitcom deal. FOX was allegedly so eager to sign Anderson that the network picked up six episodes of the show even though they still had not seen a script.
