Gordon Moore to Be Honored for Lifetime Achievement at EE Times ACE Awards

Entrepreneur and Pioneer Known for Moore's Law Has Made an Invaluable Contribution to the Semiconductor Industry

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CMP Media's EE Times today announced that Gordon Moore, co-founder and chairman emeritus of Intel Corporation, will be awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural EE Times Annual Creativity in Electronics (ACE) Awards for his pioneering role and extraordinary contributions to the semiconductor industry. This honor will be presented March 9, 2005, at an awards gala being held during CMP Media's Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco.

"We could not have chosen a more deserving person to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award than Gordon Moore, the man whose instinct, insight and spirit have helped evolve a once-tiny business segment into a transformative industry," said Brian Fuller, editor-in-chief, EE Times. "His 40-year-old assessment of the predictable march of technology, known as Moore's Law, his business achievements and his philanthropic work epitomize the very best in our world."

In 1965, Moore made an observation that the industry now considers "law." He predicted that the number of transistors the industry would be able to place on a computer chip would double every year. In 1975, he updated his prediction to a doubling every two years. While originally intended as a rule of thumb, Moore's Law became the guiding principle for the industry to deliver ever-more-powerful semiconductor chips at proportionate decreases in cost.

Moore's work began in the seminal days of the semiconductor industry as a chemist and physicist inventing technical breakthroughs necessary to create the first integrated circuits. Years later, he would begin directing and enabling technical teams that invented the first microprocessor; the first erasable, programmable read-only memory (EPROM); and the first commercially available dynamic random access memory (DRAM). These devices became the foundation for the early semiconductor industry.

Moore was a founder of two of the most important technology companies in U.S. history: Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel Corporation. Fairchild brought the world the first integrated circuits, while Intel brought the microprocessor -- the "brains" of the computer -- into the marketplace. While creating these organizations, Moore also pioneered new management practices that have collectively become known as the Silicon Valley management style.

In 2000, Gordon and his wife created the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. With a multibillion-dollar contribution from its founders, the foundation was able to begin carrying out its mission of seeking and developing outcome-based projects that will improve the quality of life for future generations. The foundation focuses on four program areas: environment, higher education, science and the San Francisco Bay Area.

The EE Times ACE Awards Lifetime Achievement Award candidates were selected by the editors of EE Times based on their individual accomplishments over the course of their careers.
