AFI Silver Launches Community Screenings Program With a Special Screening of 'Singin' in the Rain'

Montgomery County Senior Citizens Enjoy Lecture & Screening of Generational Favorite

SILVER SPRING, Md., Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center today launched its Community Screenings Program (CSP) -- an innovative program that capitalizes on the 21st century enthusiasm for screen art by people of all ages -- with a "Then and Now" series kick-off screening of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN for Montgomery County senior citizens. AFI Silver's newly established Community Screenings Program aims to educate and engage children, senior citizens, teachers, at-risk families and community leaders from Silver Spring and surrounding communities.

CSP films are selected in collaboration with expert partners in education, mental health, social services and community development, and represent the best of both fiction and documentary movies. The singular setting of the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center offers the socialization and human contact so necessary to personal and community development. The free screenings and guided discussions conducted by AFI Silver's Education Program Coordinator, Matt Boratenski, link the films to audience members' own lives, education and development.

For instance, today's opening remarks about the background of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN were delivered by AFI Silver Theatre director Murray Horwitz, Tony Award-winning co-author of Ain't Misbehavin,' and Boratenski. Among the questions asked by seniors was, "How do screenwriters decide where to use songs in the script?"

AFI Silver's partners in the Community Screenings Program include Holy Cross Hospital, the Holy Cross Hospital's Senior Source, the Mental Health Association of Montgomery County and the Montgomery County Department of Recreation.

The next CSP screening in the "Then and Now" seniors series is scheduled for April 1. Seniors today voted for their pick from 20 titles, including SOME LIKE IT HOT, THE PHILADELPHIA STORY and THE GRADUATE, among others.

In its second year of operation, the AFI Silver has already created the successful Educational Screenings Program, an imaginative approach to learning and teaching children through film, in a partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools and a family foundation. A grant from the Bank of America Foundation enables AFI Silver to offer the ambitious CSP program to a wider audience across diverse communities.
