W.N.E.T New York Biggest Winner at International Television Programming & Promotion Awards

NEW YORK, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The winners of the New York Festivals 48th annual international Television Programming & Promotion Awards were announced at a glittering black tie awards presentation in New York last night. The Awards ceremony was held at the Hudson Theatre in the heart of Manhattan's theater district and attended by some 450 producers, directors and heads of programming from broadcast, cable, satellite and syndicated stations from around the world.

Five Grand Awards were presented at the end of the evening. The Grand Award for Best Promotion Spot was awarded to NBC in Burbank, California, for their Olympics promotion 'The Olympics: Caravan.'

The Grand Award for Best Children's Programming went to Disney Channel UK in London for 'Bus Life: Bad Hair Day/Bus Life: Storming the Back Seat,' shot entirely on a moving double-decker bus.

The Grand Award for Best News Programming was presented to City-TV/Chum Television in Toronto, Canada for their coverage of an on-going story, 'Stolen Dreams.'

The Grand Award for Best Entertainment Programming went to Granada Television in London, England, for the most recent of the always excellent detective series 'Prime Suspect 6: The Last Witness.'

And the Grand Award for Best Documentary was awarded to NATURE: Thirteen/WNET New York for the stunning 'Kalahari: The Flooded Desert.'

Of the sixty three Gold World Medals conferred during the evening, the biggest individual winner was W.N.E.T. in New York, with their NATURE department collecting a Grand and Gold for 'Kalahari: The Flooded Desert,' and a second Gold for 'Shadow Over The Sun: A Story Of Eagles.' They also collected three Golds for documentaries 'Secrets of the Dead IV: D-Day' and 'DNA,' as well as for the Performing Arts Special 'the Dream With American Ballet Theatre.'

Canadian Broadcasting in Toronto was another big winner, collecting four Golds, three for documentaries and the fourth for CBC News. Discovery Networks also collected four Golds, three going to documentaries and an investigative report from the Travel Channel, and the fourth to Discovery Networks International for a current events documentary.

Overall, public television programming had the edge on cable, with additional Golds going to W.G.B.H. in Boston and Australian broadcasting.

Now in its 48th year, the New York Festivals International Television Programming & Promotion Awards is one of the world's largest competitions of its kind, and an important event in the communications industry calendar. Preliminary judging of the nearly 2,500 programs and promotion spots took place from September to December 2004. Members of the international board of judges and advisors took part in the Grand Awards judging on January 25, 2005.
