United Nations Department of Public Information Honors News Report on Darfur at New York Festivals
NEW YORK, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Nations Department of Public Information (UNDPI) presented four special awards at the New York Festivals annual international Television Programming Awards in Manhattan tonight. These prestigious awards, representing topics most reflective of the aims and ideals of the United Nations, were conferred by Caroline Petit, Promotion and Distribution Manager in the News and Media Division of UNDPI.
The UNDPI Gold Award went to Sky News, the international satellite news service based in the UK, for 'Sudan', a news report made last summer on the escalating humanitarian crisis in Western Darfur.
Two UNDPI Silver Awards were presented to programming covering HIV/AIDS: to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for 'The Nature Of Things: The Value Of Life: Aids In Africa Revisited', a sweeping documentary on the huge threat of this pandemic to Africa; and to Radio Television Hong Kong for an equally comprehensive report on the how the disease is being handled in China.
The UNDPI Bronze Award went to CNN Productions in Atlanta, Georgia for 'CNN Presents: Easy Prey: Inside The Child Sex Trade', a shocking investigation into an illegal traffic in Europe.
The panel of judges was made up of representatives of the United Nations Department of Public Information. These coveted awards -- in the form of a Gold, a Silver and a Bronze plaque -- were selected from Finalists in the New York Festivals Television Programming competition television programming that best reflects the global concerns of world health, human rights, and the fight against poverty.
The New York Festivals 2005 International Television Programming & Promotion Awards Presentations were attended by senior management and producers from broadcasters, networks, cable, satellite and independent production companies around the world. In addition to the UNDPI Awards, 63 Gold World Medals and five Grand Awards were presented by the New York Festivals. These awards recognized excellence in news, documentary, entertainment and children's programming, as well as craft and promotions/station IDs.
