Sun Fire(TM) E25K Server Running Oracle Database 10g and Solaris(TM) 10 Sets Record-Breaking Three-Terabyte Data Warehousing Benchmark Result

Large SMP server achieves world record performance on TPC-H SF3000 Benchmark

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Jan. 31
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) and Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL) today announced a record-breaking data warehousing performance result of 59,435.7 QphH@3000GB at a price-performance of $114.00/QphH@3000GB, with the Transaction Processing Performance Council's TPC-H SF3000 benchmark. This result was achieved on a 72-way 1.2 GHz UltraSPARC(R) IV processor-based Sun Fire(TM) E25K with Sun StorEdge(TM) arrays, running the industry-leading Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS) and Oracle(TM) Database 10g with Automatic Storage Management. This result demonstrates the performance leadership of the Sun UltraSPARC and Solaris on large SMP platforms and Oracle Database 10g with the most demanding enterprise application environments.

The Sun Fire E25K system outperformed the nearest competitor system(1) by over 30 percent on the TPC-H(TM) composite metric, QphH@3000GB, which is a measure of high load throughput as well as single query performance. This benchmark has no single system results on IBM Power4 or IBM Power5 servers.

The system was configured with 96 Sun StorEdge(TM) 3510 FC disk arrays. A feature of Oracle Database 10g, Oracle Automatic Storage Management is a database files system that provides cluster file system and volume manager functionality. Oracle Automatic Storage Management delivers the performance of raw asynchronous I/O with the ease of management of a file system.

Sun has an extensive history of delivering world record performance and scalability. With the new UltraSPARC IV processors and high-performance IO capabilities, Sun continues to meet the needs of the most demanding data warehousing and transaction processing requirements. The system was able to deliver 18 GB/sec IO bandwidth which demonstrates the capability of Solaris 10 and the StorEdge 3510 FC array storage to deliver real world IO performance.

About the TPC-H Benchmark

Established by the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC), the TPC-H(TM) benchmark is an industry-standard Decision Support test designed to measure systems' capability to examine large volumes of data, execute queries with a high degree of complexity, and give answers to critical business questions. The TPC-H benchmark evaluates a composite performance metric (QphH@size) and a price/performance metric ($/QphH@size) that measure the performance of various decision support systems by the execution of sets of queries against a standard database under controlled conditions.
