School Meals Score Best in Class

School Meals Score Best in Class

GREENS NORTON, England, January 19/PRNewswire/ -- Some think school meals are all 'muck off a truck'. Well we
know different. There are plenty of examples of good practice, but no one has
offered them a shop window - until now!

Best in Class is a new scheme designed to acknowledge good
quality school catering and illustrate the details online. For the first time
there will be an independent directory of good quality school catering
initiatives available freely to all those interested in improving children's
health through the enjoyment of a good diet.

Public interest seems to focus on horror stories that imply
all schools catering is of a poor quality. Best in Class flips the coin by
publicising examples of the good work being carried out by dedicated and far
sighted schools and catering professionals across the country.

Published on the Health Education Trust website (HET), Best in
Class highlights schools, caterers and suppliers who have achieved success in
one or more areas of their school meals service, with demonstrable benefits
to the school and its pupils. Not designed as a league table, this directory
gives a snapshot of individual school's catering success stories.
Illustrating good practice can facilitate improvements to the nutritional
quality of school meals, with the development of healthier eating habits for
children as our goal.

Joe Harvey, Director of HET and acknowledged expert in the
field of food in schools explains:

"I have always believed that highlighting success delivers
greater benefits than dwelling on failure. By sharing the details of these
successes I know that this will encourage and inspire other schools and
catering contractors to make improvements in their own school food service."

To be Best in Class beneficial changes to the school meals
service, such as an increase in fruit and vegetable consumption, the adoption
of a whole school approach, or the implementation of a school food and
nutrition policy are key.

First examples of Best in Class are now live at
http://www.healthedtrust.com/indicates/exgoodprc.htm. So, if you are a pupil,
parent, governor, teacher, school council, catering contractor or supplier
and you think that what you are doing is exciting and could be used by other
schools please contact us right away and help us create the directory of good
practice in school catering services.
