Envivio Demonstrates High Definition (HD) MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) Television Over Free ADSL2+ Network

First to demonstrate HD H.264 solution to subscribers for high-speed, cost- effective delivery of HD-quality video

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Envivio, Inc., a leading provider of MPEG-4 broadcast and streaming solutions, demonstrated High Definition (HD) MPEG-4 AVC television over the Free ADSL2+ network.

The Envivio HD H.264 technology solution cost-effectively delivers HD broadcast-quality video over the Free ADSL2+ network, which was launched on October 20, 2004. The demonstration took place in the context of the first anniversary of the launch of the Freebox TV service in France.

With Envivio H.264 HD technology, it was possible to encode, provide real- time distribution, and playback of H.264 HD content for the first time over a DSL network. In particular, the following products were used: the Envivio 4Coder(TM) non real-time MPEG-4/H.264 encoder, the Envivio 4Sight(TM) MPEG- 4/H.264 streaming server, and the Envivio 4View(TM) MPEG-4/H.264 real-time decoder. The HD video was encoded at 8 Mbps and transmitted over the Free ADSL2+ network.

The H.264 format offers a significant improvement in coding efficiency compared to other compression standards such as MPEG-2. Envivio HD H.264 technology doubles compression efficiency, therefore lowering by half the storage and bandwidth requirements compared to MPEG-2.
