American Power Conversion Introduces Network-Critical Physical Infrastructure Guidelines to Ensure Highly Available Small Data Centers

WEST KINGSTON, R.I., Dec. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American Power Conversion (NASDAQ:APCC) (APC) today announced new guidelines and planning resources to help IT project managers as they evaluate and plan changes to network-critical physical infrastructure (NCPI) in small data centers. APC expects its new guidelines will help IT project managers successfully deploy the appropriate NCPI in small data centers by enabling them to determine the proper level of network availability and infrastructure performance that their company needs. With the new NCPI guidelines, IT project managers can systematically review all the components and plan a coherent, strategic approach for building a new data center, or for updating an existing facility. The guidelines help IT project managers take into consideration several factors including application criticality, IT staffing and equipment, rack power density, data center security, as well as primary and backup AC power sources. These factors can have a substantial impact on the NCPI requirements for the facility, including power, cooling, rack, management and services.
"These new guidelines will allow data center managers to meet the challenge of network availability more efficiently and cost effectively than ever," said Dwight Sperry, APC's group general manager of Enterprise Systems and Business Networks. "A highly available network depends on people, process, technology, and a solid NCPI. These new guidelines should help IT project managers build a reliable NCPI or improve their existing small data center infrastructure."
A small data center is typically defined as having 5-20 racks, with a power and cooling range of 10-40kW and equipment that may include passive devices and network equipment. The NCPI guidelines offer good, better, and best alternatives for each area of small data center infrastructure, including power, cooling, rack systems (including power distribution units and cabling), management and service. For example, readers will find appropriate cooling guidelines that are ideal for high-density applications. Those options can include "in-row" computer room air conditioners, hot-aisle containment systems, and redundant cooling for IT project managers seeking the "best" solution. Similar guidelines for other areas like management and services include both centralized data center management and device-level management solutions, as well as product and professional services such as project management, needs assessments and network integration.
