Construction Writers Association Announces Marketing Communications, Website Award Winners
BUFFALO GROVE, Ill., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Nine hours after they first dug into the pile of entries, the debate among the judges for the Construction Writers Association's 2004 Marketing Communications Awards was as strong as it had been all day.
In the end, the judging panel gathered in Ontario, Canada, was pleased to announce a total of four CWA Marcom Award winners and five Honorable Mentions in the three categories of Corporate Communications, Public Relations and Advertising. Entries were received and considered by the Marketing Communications Awards judging panel, organized and hosted by CWA director Michael Anderson, editor of Equipment Journal, Missisauga, ONT, Canada.
Meanwhile, another CWA judging committee chaired by fellow CWA member and past board member Michael Reilly, of Reilly Communications in South Boston, MA, considered entries in the CWA Website Award competition. This year's single award winner was the unanimous choice of all judges.
The CWA Marketing Communications Awards and the CWA Website Award were presented during the Friday, October 15 luncheon at the 2004 CWA Midyear Meeting in Chicago.
MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS AWARDS
Corporate Communications Category
The CWA Marketing Communications Award for Corporate Communications goes to FMI Corporation for the new publication FMI Quarterly, submitted by Editor Alison Weaver. "The Harvard Business Review of the construction industry," is how one of the independent judges described the paperback book. "If they wanted to build a thoughtful platform for the modern business leaders in the industry, they hit their mark."
A second CWA Marcom Award for Corporate Communications (Direct Mail) goes to McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. for the quirky Puzzle Campaign submitted by Public Relations Manager Susan Garritano. "Brilliant!" was the response of another judging panel member. "This is a smart, fun conversation starter."
An Honorable Mention goes to Grunley Construction Company, Inc. for the employee newsletter Did You Know?, submitted by Communications Manager Donna Duncan. "Bright and easy-to-read with supportive photos well used," described one judge. "The marketing communications goals were well addressed."
An Honorable Mention also goes to Peter Kiewit Sons', Inc. for the special Defense/Civil Works edition of the Kieways publication, submitted by Editor-in-Chief Julie Gasper. "This was a great concept to showcase challenging projects," remarked one of the judges. "There was an excellent use of photos."
Public Relations Category
The CWA Marketing Communications Award for Public Relations goes to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) for the multi-media Transportation Makes America Work grassroots advocacy campaign, submitted by Public Relations Director Matt Jeanneret. "This campaign surrounds with multiple touch points ... all relevant," said a CWA judging panel member.
An Honorable Mention goes to Industrial Marketing Services for the World of Concrete press kit for JLG Industries, Inc., submitted by IMS Public Relations Director Jim Jobes. One judge termed the kit "an easy-to-use" multi-media reference and information package. "I really liked the index system in the binder."
Advertising Category
The CWA Marcom Award for Advertising goes to HITT Contracting Inc. for the "People Company" series of ads, submitted by Graphics Associate Eugene Buot. "It creates a buzz," one judge said of the series of ads. "You really want to see the next one."
An Honorable Mention goes to Orange Grove Media for the special advertising supplement "Concrete Builds the Sustainable Movement" for client Portland Cement Association, submitted by Orange Grove Media Principal Jennifer G. Prokopy. One of the judging panel members noted, "a targeted marketing message received in a substantial way." This was enhanced by the strong use of graphics, said another judge.
Another Honorable Mention goes to McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. for the "Southwest Division" ad series, submitted by Public Relations Manager Susan Garritano. "Clean, simple advertisements that emphasize the experience and history of this company," is how one judge termed the submission.
This marked the first time that judging for a CWA awards program was held outside of the United States. CWA board member Michael Anderson, who is based in Canada, put together a panel consisting of: Shannon McPeak, Vice President of Corporate Sales with Osprey Media Group; Sarah Bowers-Peter, Development Associate with the live theatre organization Drayton Entertainment; and Ronald Wyvill, recently retired after a 35-plus-year career as a sales and marketing executive in data collection technology.
WEBSITE AWARD
The unanimous choice among the judges, the 2004 CWA Website Award goes to http://www.beyondroads.com/, sponsored by the National Asphalt Pavement Association. The entry was submitted by Margaret Cervarich, NAPA's Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations.
Chaired by CWA member and former director Michael Reilly, the judging jury for this competition consisted of: Craig Park of Fields Devereaux Architects & Engineers; Amy Bowen of Communication via Design; Judy Schriener of McGraw Hill/Construction.com; and Aurora Cammaratta of RF Walsh.
