Film in Dead-Heat Race for Record Three-Day Opening Weekend in IMAX in China
SHANGHAI, May 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) today announced that Marvel's Captain America: Civil War, released by The Walt Disney Studios, blasted into the Chinese market with a record-level debut gross of $10 million on 283 IMAX screens. This puts it in a dead-heat race to overtake the current best IMAX three-day opening weekend of all time in China held by Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Globally, Captain America: Civil War has accumulated more than $31.3 million from 955 IMAX theatres, of which $16 million comes from 380 North American IMAX sites and $15.3 million from 575 international locations (including China).
In addition to the film's record-pace three-day opening weekend, Captain America: Civil War grossed $3.3 million (¥21.7 million) on Friday in China, setting a new mainland record for that day in IMAX in local currency. The film beats the previous Friday record holder, Transformers: Age of Extinction, with ¥21.0 million.
"The unparalleled opening success of Marvel's Captain America: Civil War in IMAX in China is a true testament to the film's incredibly talented and hard-working filmmakers, led by our friends Joe and Anthony Russo, as well as the spot-on marketing and distribution efforts of the entire Disney team and IMAX in China," said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. "Chinese audiences have demonstrated their excitement for the stories, characters and action within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly when seen in the best possible format -- in IMAX."
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo captured the film's key battle sequence using the new ALEXA IMAX(®) 65mm cameras, marking the first film to use the new 2D digital cameras developed in partnership between IMAX and ARRI. As a result, only in IMAX(®) theatres do sequences filmed with these cameras expand vertically to fill more of the IMAX screen, delivering IMAX audiences greater scope and breathtaking image quality.
The IMAX(®) release of Captain America: Civil War was digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience(®) with proprietary IMAX DMR(®) (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
