A Difficult Elimination Challenge Revealed the Top 9 Home Cooks on CTV's MASTERCHEF CANADA

TORONTO, April 10, 2016 /CNW/ - Following an emotional Mystery Box Challenge, pumpkin was the surprise Elimination Challenge ingredient that tripped up dedicated teacher and mother Michelle Nault from Bolton, Ont. and sent her home. MASTERCHEF CANADA with judges Michael Bonacini, Alvin Leung, and Claudio Aprile returns next Sunday, April 17 at 7 p.m. ET/PT on CTV and the CTV GO app. As Canada is home to the second largest Oktoberfest celebration in the world, this season MASTERCHEF CANADA pays tribute to the event with a challenge that sees the Top 9 home cooks face off, selling handmade sausages and sides at an Oktoberfest celebration.

On tonight's episode of MASTERCHEF CANADA, the Top 10 were given a Mystery Box Challenge inspired by their loved ones, with each home cook receiving baking ingredients as well as a photograph of family members to act as their inspiration. With emotions running high, the home cooks learned that the winner of the challenge would also have their recipe featured in a Becel advertising campaign.

With only one hour to prepare their family-inspired treats, Michelle Nault suffered a setback when part of her cake fell on the floor as she removed it from the fridge. At the same time, Jeremy Senaris' icing began melting off of his cake when he tried to ice it while it was still warm. The judges selected three desserts to taste: Terry Adido, who prepared a trio of mini-cheesecakes inspired by his sister in Nigeria; Shawn Karls' layered key lime cake which he made thinking of his dad; and Veronica Cham's ambitious traditional Japanese matcha roll cake also inspired by her father. The judges revealed that Veronica's innovative and delicious cake was the winner of the Mystery Box Challenge.

Safe from elimination, Veronica was given a sneak peek of the secret ingredient for the Elimination Challenge - pumpkin - and the judges gave her a second advantage allowing her to assign fresh or canned pumpkin to the remaining home cooks. Given only 45 minutes to prepare their dishes, a number of the home cooks went head-to-head as they made similar dishes featuring the pumpkin. Shawn, Michelle, and April Lee Baker made soup, while Mary Berg and Jennifer Baglione both prepared pumpkin gnocchi.

Shawn was named the winner thanks to his pumpkin purée soup. Mary's pumpkin gnocchi came in second place, while Terry's roasted pumpkin risotto was third. As winners of the Elimination Challenge, those three home cooks will serve as captains for next week's Team Challenge. The judges then revealed the bottom three dishes which were April Lee's pumpkin soup and sandwich, Jennifer's pumpkin potato gnocchi, and Michelle's roasted pumpkin cheddar soup, with Michelle ultimately being sent home.

On an all-new episode of MASTERCHEF CANADA (Sunday, April 17 at 7 p.m. ET/PT on CTV and CTV GO), outside of Munich, Canada's Oktoberfest is the biggest in the world which is something to celebrate! The Top 9 are split into three teams as they face off selling handmade sausages and sides at an Oktoberfest celebration. The team who sells the most orders wins, while the losing teams face a fearsome Pressure Test.

-- Terry Adido, a PhD Law Student from Edmonton, Alta.
-- Veronica Cham, a Lawyer from Toronto, Ont.
