A Successful Documentary Launch -- The VOW Project Comes to an End

SHANGHAI, Dec. 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- On Wednesday 16 December, the British Consulate-General Shanghai and the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai successfully launched the VOW Project documentary at the Joint Chamber Women in Business Christmas Mixer held at SHEN on the Bund. The VOW Project aimed to promote the benefits of having young women in leadership roles in businesses, especially those from provincial cities, and also to highlight the UK's vibrant creative sector.

This event featured the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai, AustCham Shanghai, BenCham, SwissCham, Spanish Chamber and Expatriate Professional Women's Society (EPWS) with an audience of over 100 people, including Rebecca Shao, Executive Director of Jiangsu Jiale Investment Group who took part in the VOW Project. The event received enthusiastic response from women in different industries and also served as an excellent platform to spread word about the VOW Project.

The event was hosted by Anna Elshafei, Vice Chair of The British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai. The project was introduced by Angela Lock, Deputy Executive Director of the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai and lead implementer of the VOW Project, and followed by the premiere of the VOW documentary. That evening, the VOW Project raised considerable interest and received great responses from guests. Questions rose including whether the project was to run again and some guests displayed interest in taking part in the project next time.

"The VOWers" -- five rising young female entrepreneurs from Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui province were selected and assigned to top Chinese and British business leaders for a 3-week work experience in China and the UK, the VOWers are respectively:

The mentors for the VOW Project were Huaizhen Yang, President of Sanpower Group; Xiaoyan Zheng, Chairwoman of Hefei Department Store Group; Jack Ma, Founder and Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group; Anna Manz, Group Strategy Director, Diageo Group; Angela Brav, Chief Executive Officer, Europe Region, InterContinental Hotels Group; Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Group; Mei Shui, Chief Executive Officer of Virgin Startup. Tasks assigned to the VOWers varied in industries and covered three main disciplines of business including operations, marketing and sales typically in the Chinese Market.

The project officially launched in June 2015, and the documentary premiere on Wednesday 16 December marked a successful end to the VOW Project.

About The British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai

In May of 1915, during the time of the Great War in Europe, a group of British merchants gathered at the British Consul's residence in Shanghai to discuss how to protect British business interests during a time of conflict. The meeting culminated in the formation of the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai. Although, at that time, it was considered to be a short wartime initiative, this business support organisation quickly grew in size and activity beyond the end of the First World War. The following years would see the establishment of many more British Chambers in China and by 1925 the Association of British Chambers of Commerce in China and Hong Kong, headquartered in Shanghai, had a total membership of 23 British Chambers.

Today, the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai comprises over 300 British companies and international companies with a British interest, ranging from the largest multinationals to small start-ups operating in East china. The Chamber is a non-for-profit, non-governmental organisation, funded and governed by its members. As one of the oldest foreign Chambers still operating in China, the Chamber's original ethos of helping each other in the interests of growing British trade with China, is as true today as it was 100 years ago.

About The VOW Project

Led by the British Consulate-General Shanghai and implemented by the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai, the objective of the VOW Project was to promote the benefit of the leading role young women can play in business, especially those from provincial cities, and to highlight the UK's vibrant creative sector. The project identified five young rising female entrepreneurs from Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui Provinces. The successful candidates were assigned to top Chinese and British business leaders for a 3-week work experience in China and the UK.
